A first date doesn’t need to be perfect.
Nobody expects you to deliver the perfect joke, wear the perfect outfit, or say exactly the right thing.
But some mistakes can make it much harder for another person to feel comfortable around you.
Here are ten worth avoiding.

1. Talking only about yourself
A date isn’t an interview where one person gives a presentation.
If you spend the entire evening talking about yourself without asking questions, the other person may leave feeling like you weren’t interested in them.
2. Turning the conversation into an interrogation
The opposite can also be a problem.
Question after question can make someone feel like they’re filling out a form.
Instead of simply asking, “What do you do?” follow up naturally on their answer.
3. Checking your phone constantly
A phone sitting face-down on the table is one thing.
Checking notifications every few minutes sends a very different message.
Giving someone your attention is one of the simplest ways to show respect.
4. Talking endlessly about your ex
Mentioning a previous relationship isn’t automatically bad.
But spending half the date explaining how terrible your ex was can make your date wonder whether you’re actually ready for something new.
5. Trying too hard to impress
You don’t need to exaggerate your salary, achievements, travels, or lifestyle.
Confidence is attractive. Constantly trying to prove yourself can have the opposite effect.
6. Being rude to staff
How someone treats waiters, bartenders, receptionists, or other workers can reveal a lot about their personality.
You don’t have to pretend to love everything, but basic respect matters.
7. Ignoring boundaries
If someone says they’re uncomfortable with something, respect it.
Good chemistry requires both people to feel safe and comfortable.
8. Drinking too much
A drink can help some people relax, but losing control on a first date can quickly change the entire atmosphere.
You want your date to remember the conversation—not your behavior after six drinks.
9. Making the conversation overly sexual
Flirting can be fun.
But if every topic becomes sexual before the other person is comfortable with it, the date can quickly become awkward.
Pay attention to their reactions and respect their boundaries.
10. Pretending to be someone you’re not
This may be the biggest mistake of all.
If the relationship progresses, eventually the real you will appear.
It’s better to create a genuine connection than to build attraction around a personality you can’t maintain.
The goal of a first date
The objective isn’t to convince someone to fall in love with you in two hours.
It’s simply to discover whether you enjoy spending time together.
Be curious. Be respectful. Listen. Have fun.
If the connection is real, you won’t need to perform the entire evening.
